Walking School Bus
What is a Walking School Bus? A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with adult supervision. Sunset Terrace Elementary School and St. Luke’s Church have been in collaboration for the past three years providing this experience. The walking school bus walks everyday to benefit children who live a longer distance from the school, but not quite far enough to be on a regular bus. The walking school bus is a fun, safe, and active way to travel to school. The walking school bus walks along a set route, beginning at one stop and moving to the school. It is a free service offered to students.
Why volunteer for the walking school bus? It was shown through statistics that the walking school bus increased school attendance, increased the safety of the students, encouraged a healthy, active lifestyle, taught pedestrian safety, and helped all involved gain a sense of community.
A Walking School Bus volunteer is asked to commit to one morning per week, with an estimated total time of 50 minutes. The walk is around one mile. For further details on becoming a volunteer for this ministry contact Betsy at 507-288-2469 or bornholdtb@deskmedia.com.
