Faith Formation is a LIFE LONG PROCESS…I need your help

I would like to talk about FAITH FORMATION…Sunday School…Confirmation…Inquirer’s Class…Bible Study…in this blog.

Let me begin with our challenges.  A few weeks ago, I had coffee with Pastor Dan from People of Hope.  We have been doing our Middle School Faith Formation with them for Five Years.  For a number of important reasons, the folks at People of Hope have decided to explore doing their Faith Formation with another Lutheran Church in Rochester.  I admit I was saddened by this decision but respect their desire to move in another direction.  This gives us an opportunity to consider what we want to do with our Middle School Program which has been on Wednesday Evenings for some years.

At our recent Staff Planning Retreat, we reviewed every aspect of our life…especially our commitment to FAITH FORMATION.  Not only are we presented with an opportunity to re-imagine Middle School Faith Formation…we can re-imagine Elementary Faith Formation as well.  We have struggled for the last few years with our Sunday Morning Elementary Program…and I would like to invite those of you with children from the age of 4 through Middle School to meet with me, Betsy Bornholdt and Colin Maltbie so that we might come to a decision about HOW BEST to assist YOU in the ongoing Faith Formation of your children.  I WANT TO FOCUS ON THIS IMPORTANT MINISTRY THIS YEAR!  I need your help for the sake of our children.  We have wonderful tools in place in the Worship Center and Godly Play…which may provide an intergenerational experience and even an opportunity for Fellowship.

AGAIN, this is important for our life…so please make every effort to participate in this FAITH FORMATION CONVERSATION.  WOULD YOU PLEASE COME TO ST LUKE’S ON WEDNESDAY, 31 AUGUST AT 7 P.M.?

We also need adults and high school students to serve as Catechists…as part of the Formation Team at St. Luke’s…along with me and Betsy and Colin!

We have lots of reasons to celebrate!  Every Wednesday morning…we meet for Bible Study…or Book Study…from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon.  Currently, we are reading SPEAKING CHRISTIAN by Marcus Borg.  We are looking to provide an Evening Study for those who are interested.

For the last three years, our High School Students have gathered on the 2nd Sunday of each month throughout the School Year for Pizza and Bible Study with Fr. Justin.  Fr. Colin is committed to picking up this important ministry beginning in October for High School Students from St. Luke’s and St. Peter’s!

We have a Confirmation Process for High School Students…which begins in Advent and runs through the Easter Season.  We have usually met on Sunday Mornings…between the Services.  This has been an opportunity we share with St. Peter’s as part of our Shared Ministry…so stay tuned for more information!

For those considering becoming part of the Episcopal Church, there is a Process called Growing in Faith Together (G.I.F.T.) which was offered on Tuesday Evenings last Fall and Winter.  I will be sending out invitations to this process so keep Tuesday Evenings free if you are interested.

This year, we begin our 8th year of Sunday Forum…which meets between the services in the Fellowship Hall.  I hope to meet with a small working group who would like to help plan the schedule for this program year.  If you have IDEAS for Compelling Speakers and Topics…please let me know as soon as possible.

There is a monthly BOOK STUDY which includes a meal and discussion.  This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss a book and have an opportunity for fellowship at St. Luke’s.  Information about the Book Club is posted on the Bulletin Board and on the website!

LAST but certainly not LEAST is our Annual Mega Sports Camp Vacation Bible School which is usually held in August!  This summer we were blessed to have partners in this Formation Opportunity.  Our sisters and brothers from Bethany United Methodist, Christway Full Gospel Church and Iglesia de Dios Emmanuel participated in our week long camp focused on skill building in Basketball, Cheer Leading and Soccer as well as working on developing our skills as Disciples of the Risen Christ!

Faith Formation is a LIFE LONG PROCESS!  Please mark your calendars for the FAITH FORMATION CONVERSATION on Wednesday, 31 August at 7 p.m.

And please consider yourself invited to participate in one or more of these life long Formation opportunities!

Your comments and especially your participation are most welcomed!

Every blessing,

Doug
