The General Convention…3 – 12 July 2012 …Indianapolis, Indiana

On Tuesday, 3 July, Lay and Clergy Deputies and Bishops from all parts of the Episcopal Church will arrive in Indianapolis to constitute the 77th General Convention of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America.  Every three years, we gather to consider and act on resolutions that address our policy and governance…amending our Church Canons and in some instances, amending our Constitution, which requires the consent of two consecutive Conventions for adoption.

Many people work over a period of three years to prepare for the General Convention.  Standing Commissions, Committees, Boards and Agencies prepare reports and in some instances, resolutions for members of the House of Deputies and House of Bishops to consider.

The Deputation from the Episcopal Church in Minnesota is comprised of 4 Lay Deputies and 1 alternate, 4 Clergy Deputies and 1 alternate and our Bishop. Members of the Lay Deputation are Sally Johnson, Jim Huber, Larry Reynolds, Sue Triebenbach and Lou Schoen.  Members of the Clergy Deputation are Devon Anderson, Doug Sparks, LeeAnne Watkins, Michelle Morgan and Beth Royalty.

While there are a number of important resolutions and issues that will be considered, there are several I would like to highlight.  We will consider material prepared as a resource for the Blessing of Same Gender Relationships.  We will consider various recommendations and initiatives regarding the structure and possible restructuring of the Episcopal Church.  We will adopt a Budget for the next three years (2013-2015).  The House of Deputies will be electing a President and Vice President from among its members.  We will also elect a group of people (lay and ordained) to constitute a Nominating Committee for our Next Presiding Bishop.  Bishop Katharine’s 9 year term will end in 2015.

So, as you can see, the next 11 days are important days for our common life as Episcopalians as we continue to engage God’s Mission in all the places we find ourselves.

I have pasted below various URL addresses that you can check regularly to get timely updates on the deliberations and actions of the General Convention:

You can also follow the deputies on Twitter hashtag, #GCMN12.

Please keep all of those involved as Deputies and Bishops in your prayer over the next 11 days!

I will have specific responsibilities serving on the Joint Standing Commission on Program, Budget and Finance…and will be blogging about these activities on the ECMN Deputy Blog.

See you on Sunday, 15 July!
