Repenting of the Sin of Racism…

Repenting of the Sin of Racism…

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

I will, with God’s help!

from The Baptismal Covenant, page 304

The Book of Common Prayer, 1979

I have been thinking about Racism these last few days in light of events surrounding the death Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of George Zimmerman…and the entire Judicial Process.

A few years ago, I participated in the Racism Awareness Training which took place in our diocese as part of our Church’s response to the reality of institutional racism.  I became aware of the reality of and dynamics of white privilege that I, along with every other white person, benefits from…

I also believe there are those who think that racism is solved or over because we elected a person of color as our president.  This couldn’t be further from the truth.

I have been moved once again by re-reading the Pastoral Letter on the Sin of Racism issued in March of 1994 by the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church.  They issued another Pastoral Letter in March of 2006.  Both of them can be found at the bottom of this blog post.

There are two other articles that have profoundly influenced my own journey and repentance regarding racism.

“Unmasking the Face of Racism” by the Rev. Ed Rodman and

“Why, as Christians, We Must Oppose Racism” by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Rodman calls us to recognize the four levels of awareness that are required as we come to admit and repent of our complicity in the Sin of Racism.

The Individual Level

The Interpersonal Level

The Institutional Level

The Cultural Level

So I encourage you to take the time to read the articles and Pastoral Letters below…and consider your own complicity in the Sin of Racism and what steps you might take along the repentance road…

I will repent and return, we will repent and return…with God’s help!
